Writing Center now open for spring semester

The Writing Center of Messiah College is now open for the spring semester! The hours are as follows:

  • Mondays and Wednesdays: 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and 2:00-9:00 p.m.
    Tuesdays and Thursdays: 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and 2:00-9:00 p.m.
    (The Writing Center is closed each Monday from 5:00-6:00 for staff meeting.)

Stop by to use this free campus resource to improve your academic writing assignments. You can bring a paper at any stage in the writing process—even when it’s just an idea! Make an appointment on MCSquare as far in advance as possible, as slots are expected to book up very quickly this semester. Be sure to print off your paper before coming as it makes it easier for everybody! Visit The Writing Center online here.

Learning Center announces spring hours

OPT Info Session to be Held

International Student Programs will hold an information session on Optional Practical Training (OPT) for current F-1 visa students on Tuesday, Feb. 17, from 5 to 6 p.m. in Larsen 237. The purpose of OPT is to allow international students the opportunity to obtain part- or full-time work authorization for 12 months in a position directly related to a student’s major area of study. If you are considering OPT and are interested in learning more about how to apply, you should attend this session.

No plans yet for upcoming breaks? Go on a Service Trip!

International Student Program announces opportunities for J-Term and Spring Break Service Trips. Since J-term break is so short and many international, missionary and transcultural students end up staying on campus anyway, why not instead go on a memorable and meaningful Service Trip.

The application for J-Term is currently available, and the Florida Spring Break trip is also available. The Agape Center also provides scholarships for students unable to pay the full price.

College to offer FREE shuttle service before and after winter break

The Office of Student Involvement and Leadership Programs (SILP) is currently coordinating FREE shuttle rides to and from Harrisburg International Airport, the Harrisburg Amtrak/Greyhound stations and the nearby Megabus pick-up and drop-off location before Christmas (Winter) Break.

To plan rides accordingly for students who need this service, SILP asks that you e-mail SILP@messiah.edu by Dec. 9 with your schedule of departure and arrival times in and out of Harrisburg. This will allow SILP to coordinate shuttles from the Grantham campus.

If you have any questions about this service, please e-mail SILP@messiah.edu or call extension 5240. The Christmas Break shuttle dates are:

  • Tuesday, Dec. 17 through Friday, Dec. 20, 2013
  • Monday, Jan. 6 through Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014

Spring Internship application deadline approaching

Reminder: If you wish to earn academic credit for an internship in the Spring, the application deadline is Tuesday, October 1.

Go to www.messiah.edu/internship and click on the “Inquiring Students” link. Most all of your questions will likely be answered by the information found there. If you would like some assistance locating an internship site, you may apply by clicking the blue “Application” ribbon on the right side of the page.

Offices Relocate to Better Serve Students

The Office of Disability Services (ODS), the Writing Center (WC) and the Learning Center (LC) have moved to Murray Library to form the new Learning Commons. The ODS is located in room 115. The WC and the LC are located in room 110. This move is designed to better serve students.

Tests proctored by ODS will be administered in their new area. Test pick up, however, will remain at Faculty Services in Hoffman. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Amy Slody, Director of Disability Services/ADA Coordinator, at extension 7258 or send an e-mail to aslody@messiah.edu. Stop in to see the new offices!

2013 Intercultural Photo Contest

Nelson Lakes National Park, New Zealand

Have you had an intercultural experience in the past year (February 2012–February 2013) through one of Messiah’s many opportunities to engage the world at home and abroad?  Have some photos to show for it?  If so, this contest is for you!

Submit up to four (4) photographs in the following categories:

  • Transformative Learning 
  • Servant Leadership 
  • Engaging the World 
  • Embracing Diversity 

Submissions must have been taken during a Messiah-sponsored experience, such as:

  • Cultural events on or off campus;
  • Semester-long off-campus programs;
  • Cross-cultural courses;
  • Philadelphia Campus;
  • International service and mission teams (i.e., Collaboratory, Agapé Center, etc.).

Amazon gift cards will be awarded for first place ($50), second place ($25), and honorable mention ($15) in each category! Winning entries will also be displayed on the second floor of Larsen Student Union beginning in early April.

Complete the entry form on our website by Friday, March 1!

Learning Center tutors available for you

The Learning Center is now open! Appointments may be scheduled online via Self-Service Quicklinks on MCSquare.

The Learning Center has very capable tutors in the following subjects: biology, chemistry, nursing, philosophy, music theory, Spanish, French, German and education (PAPA exam). All tutors are able to assist with time management, note taking, test taking and reading, as well.

For further assistance, call ext. 7209 or come by the Learning Center, Hoffman 113C. It is open Monday through Thursday from 3–10 p.m. More information can also be found on the website: http://www.messiah.edu/academics/learning-center/index.html.
